FARA VOCE x WITHOUT A VOICE
Fara Voce is a dance project for young people USING HipHop to work on challenging topics of European history and deepen their understanding of the largest European minority: Sinti and Roma.
IN SOMMER 2016
young people from Saarbrücken, Lorraine, Sarajevo and Targu Jiu were invited to live, dance, and think for two weeks in Targu Jiu (Romania). Housed in a school, the 53 teenagers trained daily in empty classrooms, the gym, and the courtyard. The 60-minute dance-theater play was premiered for the first time on an open-air stage in Targu Jiu.
When talking about Sinti and Roma, images often arise in the mind: ideas of poverty, crime, inadequate ability, or willingness to adapt. Old prejudices from film, theater, and literature mix with modern ideas.
Our project questions the often reflex-like rejection as well as the fixed prejudice about the danger that Sinti and Roma supposedly pose for society. We ask about the prejudices within ourselves and shed light on the reasons, consequences, and structures of an aversion or hostility towards Sinti and Roma that is still widespread across Europe.
Dealing with history through dance offers opportunities to break down prejudices and look for approaches to what a decent, respect-based approach to dealing with minorities in our own city, our own country, and all of Europe can look like.
